چکیده

Tidal devices are likely to faced with shear flows and subjected various wave climates. The paper presents an experimental study of the combined impacts profile irregular waves on loading a 1/20th scale device operating at peak power extraction. experiments presented were conducted depths facilitate analysis effects flow impact positions in water column. fluid field was measured three different upstream (top, middle bottom rotor) for each experiment; doing so, data from captured times. measurements high quality analysed present structure device, which contained velocity turbulence profiles. measurement utilised understand development structures approach confirmed via cross-covariance calculations. long datasets gathered used produce full rotational probability density functions blade-root-bending moments blades. spectral characteristics also considered, showed that rotor quantities less reactive smaller structures.

Shear Viscosity under Shock-Loading Conditions

Although we rarely see a shock wave in everyday life, we experience them upon hearing the sound of an explosion, the bang of a gunshot, or the crack of a whip. In addition, objects that travel at supersonic speeds, such as bullets and missiles, also generate shock waves. During a typical shock-loading process, large pressures generated at the shock front can lead to an increase in the reactants...

Modelling a Tidal Turbine in Unsteady Flow

A brief review of the literature is provided on the characteristics of marine currents and the approaches used for simulating tidal turbines. The feasibility of using CFD models to simulate time-dependent turbulent flow around a tidal turbine is then explored. Two different approaches for specifying the structure of the turbulent inflow conditions in CFD models are compared: the von Kármán spec...

Wave–current interaction effects on tidal stream turbine performance and loading characteristics

The transient interaction between tidal currents and the rotation of a horizontal axis turbine rotor have the potential to induce high asymmetric loadings, which are subsequently transmitted to the drive shaft and potentially high speed drive train components. To mitigate the potential for early component failure, analysis of asymmetric loading on marine turbines is fundamental to the design pr...

A PRACTICAL WEIGHT OPTIMIZATION FOR MOMENT FRAMES UNDER COMBINED LOADING

This article introduces three simple ideas that lead to the efficient design of regular moment frames. The finite module concept assumes that the moment frame may be construed as being composed of predesigned, imaginary rectangular modules that fit into the bays of the structure. Plastic design analysis aims at minimizing the demand-capacity ratios of elements of ductile moment frames by induci...

Finite Element Simulations of Colloidal Aggregates under Shear Flow Conditions

We perform finite element simulations of aggregates in shear flow environments, in order to improve the model of hydrodynamic forces used for discrete element simulations. The mechanistic model for the discrete element simulations implies until now the so-called free-draining approximation for the fluid forces which is a drastic simplification. From the finite element simulations we extract the...
